Each year, approximately 50,000 new cases of oral cancer are diagnosed in the United States. This disease can affect various tissues in the mouth, including the tongue, gums, and throat. The danger lies in its potential to cause significant damage to oral tissues and spread to other areas if not promptly treated. At Dental Care Acworth, our goal is to help reduce this number by offering routine oral cancer screenings as a part of our comprehensive general dentistryΒ services.

Common Signs of Mouth Cancer: What to Watch For

Oral cancers often progress without noticeable symptoms in the early stages, which is why regular screenings are so crucial. However, some individuals may experience certain abnormalities in the mouth or throat that warrant evaluation by a Acworth dentist. Knowing the potential signs of oral cancer can help you seek prompt care. These symptomsΒ include:

  • Hoarseness or Sore Throat: A persistent sore throat or hoarseness that does not improve could indicate a problem.

FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions About Oral Cancer Screening

Oral cancer screening is a non-invasive and quick procedure performed by a dentist to detect early signs of cancer in the mouth and throat. Its early detection is important as it often develops without symptoms.

Oral cancer symptoms are not generic, but if these persist for weeks, then a medical consultation is required. Some common signs are mouth sores, red or white patches, lumps in the throat, difficulty in swallowing, and changes in oral tissues.

To protect yourself and your family from oral cancer, it is recommended to undergo regular dental checkups, typically every six months.

Oral cancer screening typically takes between 5 and 10 minutes as part of a dental or medical examination. The dentist or doctor checks your mouth, tongue, throat, and other tissues for any signs of cancer.

Oral cancer can occur in non-smokers because of infection with HPV, heavy drinking, genetics, or sun exposure to the lips. While smoking is a major risk factor, not smoking doesn't rule out the risk of developing the disease.

Great dental care and amazing doctors! For capping my tooth we had a small misunderstanding and setback but they went out of their way to make it right for me and treated me with respect! I’m terrible with names but the doctor, i believe she’s Latin like me, and wears glasses. She puts 100% into her work and making sure everything is perfect. And the assistant with a low blonde ponytail was also very kind and knowledgeable. Me and my family will definitely continue coming to Dental Care Acworth!

This is truly the best dental office I have ever visited! Mayra and Dr. Melissa were exceptional. They accommodated me for a same-day cleaning and provided wonderful care from start to finish. I first came to this office several years ago for a second opinion after another dental practice told me I would need a dental implant costing between $4,000 and $6,000. Instead, Dr. Mitchell was able to save what he described as a healthy tooth by placing a crown. I remain incredibly grateful for his honesty, transparency, and conservative approach to my care. Despite staff changes over the years, the kindness and quality of care have remained consistently outstanding. Even the receptionist, Maggieβ€”I hope I remembered her name correctlyβ€”was friendly and helpful! I will gladly recommend this office to everyone I know. The entire team makes an experience many people dread feel comfortable and pleasant. They all deserve raises!

This is the best Dental practice I have ever been to. Dr Melissa’s and her staff are not only professionals at what they do but they do everything in a compassionate and caring manner. Dr Mellissa took the time to explain the dental care that was needed, options, and always gave estimates on each procedure. This was the only dental office where I felt that they were not trying to upsell me. Their in house dental plans are very competitive and are a great option for dental coverage.
